Medicare help in Ohio

Legacy Life Group holds a Ohio insurance license and helps Ohio residents compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement and prescription drug plans, at no cost.

Why local plan comparison matters in Ohio

The Medicare Advantage plans available to you, their provider networks, their drug formularies and their premiums are set at the county level. Medicare Supplement pricing also varies by state and by carrier. A plan that is excellent one county over may not even exist in yours.

As independent agents serving Ohio, we compare the plans that are actually offered where you live, check them against your doctors and your medication list, and give you a straight recommendation. If staying put is your best move, we will tell you that too.

Medicare in Ohio: what's different

Medicare is a federal program, but a few important rules and resources are set state by state. Here is what applies in Ohio.

Medicare Advantage in Ohio

About 61% of Ohioans with Medicare Parts A and B are in a Medicare Advantage plan in 2026. Ohio has about 2.6 million people on Medicare.

Medigap rules in Ohio

Ohio’s Medigap open enrollment applies only to people 65 and older, so insurers do not have to sell Medigap plans to people under 65 on Medicare. At 65 you get a guaranteed 6-month window to buy any plan. Ohio adds one protection: a guaranteed right to buy a plan if a state Medicaid plan that supplements your Medicare ends. There is no "birthday rule" for switching plans.

Help paying for Medicare

If your income is limited, a Medicare Savings Program can pay your Part B premium and sometimes more. In Ohio, apply through the Ohio Department of Medicaid (Medicare Premium Assistance Program). For help with drug costs, you can also apply for Extra Help through Social Security.

Free counseling and license checks

OSHIIP (Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program) offers free, unbiased Medicare counseling at 1-800-686-1578. You can look up any agent's license, including ours, with the Ohio Department of Insurance.

Do you charge Ohio residents for help?

No. Our services are free. We are paid by the carriers when you enroll, and your premium is the same either way.

Can you help me remotely?

Yes. We work with clients by phone and video across every state we serve, and everything can be handled without an office visit.

Can I buy a Medicare Supplement in Ohio if I am under 65?

Only if an insurer chooses to sell you one. Ohio does not require insurers to offer Medigap plans before 65, and they can use health questions. At 65 you get a guaranteed 6-month window to buy any plan. Until then, a Medicare Advantage plan is often the more practical choice. We can check your options.
