Medicare help in South Carolina

Legacy Life Group holds a South Carolina insurance license and helps South Carolina residents compare Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement and prescription drug plans, at no cost.

Why local plan comparison matters in South Carolina

The Medicare Advantage plans available to you, their provider networks, their drug formularies and their premiums are set at the county level. Medicare Supplement pricing also varies by state and by carrier. A plan that is excellent one county over may not even exist in yours.

As independent agents serving South Carolina, we compare the plans that are actually offered where you live, check them against your doctors and your medication list, and give you a straight recommendation. If staying put is your best move, we will tell you that too.

What we help South Carolina residents with

  • Turning 65 and enrolling for the first time
  • Comparing Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement
  • Annual plan reviews during AEP (October 15 - December 7)
  • Part D drug plan selection based on your prescriptions
  • Life insurance, fixed annuities and hospital indemnity plans

Medicare in South Carolina: what's different

Medicare is a federal program, but a few important rules and resources are set state by state. Here is what applies in South Carolina.

Medicare Advantage in South Carolina

About 49% of South Carolinians with Medicare Parts A and B are in a Medicare Advantage plan in 2026, lower than most of the South. South Carolina has about 1.3 million people on Medicare.

Medigap rules in South Carolina

South Carolina follows the federal minimum Medigap rules. Private insurers do not have to sell Medigap plans to people under 65. The only guaranteed option for people on Medicare because of a disability is the South Carolina Health Insurance Pool, which is very expensive. At 65 you get a guaranteed 6-month window to buy any plan. There is no "birthday rule" for switching plans.

Help paying for Medicare

If your income is limited, a Medicare Savings Program can pay your Part B premium and sometimes more. In South Carolina, apply through the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (Healthy Connections). For help with drug costs, you can also apply for Extra Help through Social Security.

Free counseling and license checks

South Carolina SHIP (Department on Aging) offers free, unbiased Medicare counseling at 1-800-868-9095. You can look up any agent's license, including ours, with the South Carolina Department of Insurance.

Do you charge South Carolina residents for help?

No. Our services are free. We are paid by the carriers when you enroll, and your premium is the same either way.

Can you help me remotely?

Yes. We work with clients by phone and video across every state we serve, and everything can be handled without an office visit.

Can I buy a Medicare Supplement in South Carolina if I am under 65?

Private insurers in South Carolina do not have to sell you one, and the state’s guaranteed option (the South Carolina Health Insurance Pool) is expensive. For many people under 65, a Medicare Advantage plan is the more affordable route until the guaranteed Medigap window at 65. We can walk you through both.
